Two working mums have swapped their finance careers for fashion, launching a business that gives a second life to unwanted clothes in Gosforth. Style Social, founded by Katy McKinlay, 35, from Wideopen, and Victoria Catherall, 44, from Benton, aims to boost sustainability by reselling pre-loved items at bargain prices.
From Finance to Fashion
Both women worked over 15 years in finance before deciding to pursue a passion project. Katy said: “We wanted to do something that we knew we would enjoy and be passionate about.” Victoria added: “We both had an Ikea bag in the corners of our bedroom full of clothes we wanted to sell but didn’t because of children and work. So we thought we could be those people, the middlemen.”
How Style Social Works
The process is simple: clients email to arrange a collection date. Katy and Victoria pick up items, sort through them, and select what will sell. They are upfront about their criteria, ensuring quality and good condition. Victoria explained: “We do a lot of research to get the best price for the client.” The consignment model builds trust, keeping clients loyal.
Sustainability and Community
Second-hand clothes have lost their stigma thanks to platforms like Vinted, but many people lack time to list items online. Style Social offers a solution, preventing clothes from ending up in landfill. Katy said: “It’s about finding second homes for beautiful items that just don’t deserve to be thrown away.”
The name Style Social reflects the dual focus: selling pre-loved clothes for sustainability and fostering community. Pop-up shops offer a social experience, with tables set up for customers to enjoy a glass of wine or hot drink. Victoria said: “That’s why we love to do this, meeting people, customers and clients.”
Pop-Up Success and Future Plans
Style Social has hosted five pop-up events, including two at Gosforth Hotel, one at One Eleven café, and two at Gosforth Central. They have over 100 clients and have rehomed more than 1,200 items through pop-ups and Vinted. The duo aims to open a permanent shop. Katy said: “That’s what we want, somewhere permanent where people know they can go all the time. That’s the dream.”
Empowering Women and the Environment
The business empowers local women to declutter and earn extra cash while providing affordable, sustainable fashion. Victoria said: “Our customers are not only making a sustainable choice but are also helping strengthen the local community and economy. You’re helping the environment but you’re also getting a bargain.”
