Expert Advice for a Beautiful Summer Garden
With summer fast approaching, many people are prioritising time outdoors. Those fortunate enough to have a garden might be eager to give it a makeover. Introducing new flowers to create colour and dimension may seem intimidating, but numerous experts provide professional guidance online, especially for easy-care plants.
Ryan Dowsell, a gardener who uses TikTok to share his best advice, focuses on creating a classic 'English flower garden'. In a recent clip, he unveiled six 'easy to care for' and enduring flowers for 'low maintenance' beauty this summer.
Ryan's Top Six Drought-Tolerant Flowers
In the footage, Ryan crouches beside a dense plant border in his garden. He says: 'Plants I never have to water. If you struggle to keep plants alive, these are the plants you need to grow. They're low maintenance, love full sun, and drought tolerant when established.'
- Salvia 'Caradonna': 'Gorgeous flower spikes' that 'look great at the front of a border'. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) says they bloom for a long period in summer and early autumn, producing tubular, two-lipped flowers in almost every colour.
- Catmint: 'A pollinator magnet' that 'looks beautiful at the front of a border'. The RHS brands these lavender-blue flowers 'dependable' and 'tough'.
- Erigeron karvinskianus: A semi-evergreen plant that 'softens a border with its beautiful white and pink flowers'.
- Sedums: 'The stars of autumn with their beautiful flowers adored by pollinators.'
- Eryngiums: 'Stunning architectural flowers' that 'look great at the front of a border'. These evergreen perennials have spiky, long blue-grey leaves and rounded, dark blue flowerheads.
- Verbena bonariensis: 'Adds height and elegance to the back of a border.'
Low Maintenance and Pet-Friendly
Ryan reiterated the plants' qualities in the caption: 'The ultimate easy to care for perennial flowers. These plants thrive in dry, sunny flower borders and low maintenance gardens. Once established, you don't even have to water them, making them perfect for hotter, drier UK summers.'
In the comments section, users shared their views. One asked about pet safety, and Ryan replied: 'Yes, none of these plants are known to be toxic to pets or people.' Another user said: 'Writing these down ASAP!' while a fourth commented: 'Wow stunning!' Someone else added: 'I learnt about new plants from this video! Thank you, the eryngiums are stunning.'
