Huge fire at Deptford waste facility sends black smoke across London

A massive fire has broken out at a waste facility in Deptford, southeast London, sending thick black smoke across the capital. The blaze involves around 50 tonnes of household waste stored at the site.

Emergency response and advice

The alarm was raised at 7.59pm, with fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters dispatched to the scene. Local residents have been told to keep doors and windows closed as thick smoke billows out of the area.

The plumes have been spotted across London, as far as Bethnal Green and Thamesmead. Passers-by in Canary Wharf, London Bridge and New Cross also posted videos and pictures of the blaze online.

Train disruption and ongoing efforts

The fire, near a railway, has disrupted Southeastern train services, the company said on X. Crews from East Greenwich, Old Kent Road, Deptford and surrounding fire stations have been sent to the scene. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
