TikTok Binman Explains How to Recycle Takeaway Containers Correctly
Binman Settles Takeaway Container Recycling Debate

A TikTok expert known as The No1 Binman has finally settled the debate on what to do with empty takeaway containers, particularly those from fast food chains like McDonald's. The rules around recycling can be confusing, especially after changes in March 2026 for certain council areas in England. The binman has been answering public questions on the platform, providing clear guidance on where to place different types of rubbish.

Only Non-Greasy Items Can Be Recycled at Home

According to the binman, only pieces of rubbish with no food debris left on them can be recycled at home. Anything else must be thrown in the general waste. Fast food wrappers covered in grease or sauce stains cannot be recycled because they can interfere with the machinery at collection centres.

Explaining the rules, the binman said that items without severe food stains, such as the carrier bag the order arrived in, can go in the paper recycling bin. However, it is important to check the inside to ensure no food has fallen out or stained it.

Leftover Food Can Go in Food Waste Bins

Any leftover food can be placed in the food waste bin. The binman confirmed: "Absolutely no problem at all." However, for everything else, it is a general waste job. He stated: "The containers, the cups, the straws, unfortunately, cannot be recycled within your household recycling bin. So you have to put that in your general waste."

Why Greasy Containers Can't Be Recycled

The experts at Recycle Right explained: "Cardboard that is stained with grease, food, paint, dirt, etc - is contaminated and should be thrown away in your rubbish bin. Remember to flatten boxes and remove all packing tape, and plastic inserts from cardboard packaging before recycling."

If you eat your food in the restaurant, it is much easier to recycle the packaging. The binman explained that restaurants have the facilities to do so, and items will be taken to the right places if placed in the correct bin.
