Millions of Americans across three US states have been urged to remain indoors on Monday as a blanket of toxic smog envelops the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings for residents in parts of Arizona, Texas, and California, advising them to limit outdoor activities and take necessary precautions as dangerous ozone pollution spreads across heavily populated areas.
Health Risks from Ground-Level Ozone
Ground-level ozone is a potent oxidant that acts as a respiratory irritant, causing immediate breathing difficulties such as coughing, throat irritation, and chest pain. The NWS emphasizes that this pollutant can exacerbate chronic conditions like asthma and bronchitis.
Air Quality Alerts Issued
Air quality alerts have been declared for the Phoenix metropolitan area and the Tucson region in Arizona, the El Paso area in Texas, and California’s Imperial Valley. Atmospheric conditions are expected to trap harmful ozone pollution near the ground through Tuesday, prolonging the health risk.
Arizona
The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality warned that weather conditions combined with existing pollution levels would create dangerous ozone concentrations in both the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas. Residents are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor exertion and keep windows closed.
Texas
In Texas, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has issued an Ozone Action Day for El Paso, including Downtown El Paso, Socorro, Fort Bliss, and surrounding communities. Officials urge residents to carpool, use public transport, and reduce emissions to help mitigate the smog.
California
California officials have also extended an air quality alert for the Imperial Valley, warning that ozone pollution levels will likely peak during the afternoon and early evening hours. Residents are advised to stay indoors and use air purifiers if available.
This is a developing story, and further updates are expected as the situation evolves.
