Brazilian Judge Halts Sugarloaf Mountain Zipline Project
A Brazilian judge has issued a decisive ruling to block the construction of a zipline connecting Sugarloaf Mountain to Morro da Urca in Rio de Janeiro. The proposed attraction, which was nearly finished, aimed to propel visitors at speeds of almost 62 miles per hour across four half-mile ziplines, as reported by BBC News.
Environmental Concerns and Legal Action
The project, which had reached 95 per cent completion, faced intense opposition from local residents and environmental activists. They argued that the zipline would cause irreparable damage to the Unesco World Heritage Site, highlighting the need to preserve its natural and cultural integrity. Judge Paulo Andre Manfredini ruled in favour of these concerns, emphasising the "inestimable value of Sugarloaf Mountain" in his decision to halt all construction activities.
Financial Penalties and Future Appeals
In addition to stopping the project, Judge Manfredini ordered the developer and the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN) to pay 30 million reals, equivalent to approximately £4.35 million, in damages. This financial penalty underscores the severity of the environmental violations alleged in the case. The zipline developer is expected to appeal against the ruling, potentially leading to further legal proceedings that could impact the future of the site.
The decision comes amidst ongoing debates about balancing tourism development with conservation efforts in protected areas.
