Families across London gathered under the sun at Trafalgar Square to celebrate Eid, marking the end of Ramadan, Islam's holy month of fasting. The event, now in its 20th edition, was organised by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and featured a diverse lineup of performances, including Danish rapper Isam B, the London Arab Orchestra, and British musician Khaled Sadiq.
"All, regardless of faith, race or background are welcome," Mr. Khan said in a message played through speakers to the crowds. Attendees, dressed in colourful outfits, enjoyed the festivities against the backdrop of Nelson's Column. The event also offered food stalls, art installations, and an exhibition by a Muslim girls' fencing team.
Deputy Mayor Addresses Islamophobia
Deputy Mayor of London Debbie Weekes-Bernard used the occasion to denounce recent instances of Islamophobia, particularly those seen at the Unite the Kingdom rally held in the same square two weeks ago. That rally, led by activist Tommy Robinson, featured speakers calling for Islam to be "removed" from Parliament and for Muslims to leave the country.
"We know that there was a lot of Islamophobia on display and that is not something we stand for here," Weekes-Bernard said. She emphasised that the rhetoric does not "reflect London at all" and that Eid in the Square was a way for people to "come together" and celebrate the Muslim communities in London.
A Celebration of Unity
The event was a vibrant display of unity, with families of all faiths coming together to enjoy live music, food, and art. The sunny weather added to the festive atmosphere, as attendees basked in the warmth and celebrated the end of Ramadan.
The deputy mayor's remarks highlighted the contrast between the inclusive spirit of the Eid celebration and the divisive messages of the earlier rally. She reiterated that London is a city that welcomes everyone, regardless of their background.
