Tragedy Strikes Miami Lobster Mini-Season: Two Divers Dead in Separate Incidents
Two divers die during Florida lobster mini-season

The annual lobster mini-season in Florida has turned tragic this year, with two divers losing their lives in separate incidents off the Miami coast. The two-day event, which allows recreational hunters to catch spiny lobster before the commercial season begins, has once again raised concerns about water safety.

Double Tragedy in Miami Waters

Authorities confirmed the first fatality occurred when a 56-year-old man was pulled unconscious from the water near Key Biscayne on Wednesday morning. Despite immediate CPR efforts by fellow divers and emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The second victim, a 35-year-old man, was found unresponsive later that same day near Nixon Beach. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews attempted life-saving measures, but were unable to revive him.

Safety Concerns During Popular Event

The lobster mini-season attracts thousands of divers to South Florida waters each year. While exact causes of death remain under investigation, officials suspect possible medical emergencies may have contributed to both incidents.

"These tragedies serve as a sobering reminder of the risks involved in diving," said Miami-Dade Police spokesperson Alvaro Zabaleta. "We urge all participants to prioritize safety, monitor their physical condition, and never dive alone."

Essential Safety Tips for Divers:

  • Always dive with a partner
  • Regularly check equipment before entering the water
  • Be aware of physical limitations and medical conditions
  • Monitor weather and water conditions
  • Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol consumption

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission continues to investigate both incidents while reminding divers that the lobster season requires a valid saltwater fishing license with a spiny lobster permit.
