Seven stolen dogs have captured the hearts of millions across the globe after escaping a dog meat factory in China and embarking on a remarkable ten-mile journey home together. Viral footage shows the animals, ranging in size from small to large, forming what observers have dubbed a 'band of brothers' as they trotted down a busy highway in Changchun, Jilin province.
A Remarkable Display of Camaraderie
In the widely shared clip, the dogs demonstrate extraordinary teamwork. They are seen surrounding an injured German shepherd, offering protection and support, while a Corgi leading the pack repeatedly looks back to ensure none are left behind. The group included a diverse mix of breeds such as Golden Retrievers, Labradors, and a Pekingese, all moving in unison.
The person who filmed the initial footage told the mainland Chinese outlet Dahe Daily: 'They resemble a band of little brothers in distress, moving in unison - nothing like stray dogs.' Despite several attempts to guide them to safety, the dogs ignored his calls, prompting him to share the video online and urge local authorities to intervene. Another passerby also captured footage of the dogs wandering through nearby fields, adding to the documentation of their journey.

The local Bitter Coffee Stray Dog Base indicated that the animals likely originated from the same village and had formed strong bonds, which may have contributed to their cohesive escape. Volunteers were quickly dispatched, along with a drone, to track the dogs and help guide them home. One volunteer claimed the animals had been stolen by individuals operating a dog meat shop and may have escaped from a transport truck, although no witnesses directly observed their flight.
This incident highlights ongoing controversies in northern China, where some dog meat restaurants still operate. During the long, harsh winters, certain locals believe consuming dog meat provides warmth and sustenance. The Dalian Animal Protection Association noted that dog farms are rare due to the high costs of raising dogs, making stray animals and stolen pets a cheaper and easier source of meat for many traders. Cities including Changchun, Harbin, and Dalian have reported numerous cases of pet dogs being stolen, underscoring a persistent issue.

On March 19, a volunteer informed Jimu News that all seven dogs had successfully returned to their owners, who belonged to three separate households. Based on the timeline from videos showing their journey, it is believed they escaped on March 16 and reached their respective homes by March 18. The highway where they were first spotted was approximately 17 kilometers from their village.
One owner expressed immense relief, stating: 'We are so lucky they came back, not to be eaten,' after his missing German shepherd and Golden Retriever made it home. Another owner proudly mentioned her Corgi's cleverness and ability to find its way home, while a third praised her Corgi's intelligence in leading the group back. Currently, there is no further information about the suspected thieves. In China, dog theft is a criminal offence, with penalties including fines or imprisonment depending on the animal's value.
