Twins Who Fought Crocodiles Lead Campaign to Save Species

Twin sisters Georgia and Melissa Laurie, who survived a harrowing crocodile attack in Mexico in 2021, are now leading a conservation campaign to protect the very species that attacked them. The 33-year-old sisters from Sandhurst, Berkshire, have partnered with the Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC) in Belize to help reverse the declining population of the American Crocodile.

Surviving the Attack

During a trip to Mexico in June 2021, the sisters were swimming in a river off the Manialtepec Lagoon in Puerto Escondido after a guide incorrectly assured them it was safe. Georgia spotted a crocodile about 15 meters away and urged everyone to swim to safety. As Melissa grabbed an outstretched arm from a group member on the riverbank, the crocodile snatched her arm and dragged her into thick mangroves. Georgia found her sister and revived her, but the crocodile attacked again, biting Georgia's ankle. She fought it off by punching its nose while shielding Melissa's head. The reptile returned for a final attack, death-rolling Melissa, but Georgia managed to wrench her sister free. Melissa suffered an open wrist fracture, severe abdominal puncture wounds, and leg injuries, later contracting sepsis in a Mexican hospital. Georgia received a King's Gallantry Medal in December 2024 for her bravery.

Conservation Efforts

Speaking to BBC Breakfast from the CRC in Belize, Georgia said, "It's such a weird feeling. I can't believe that we are here now. We have come so far in our healing journey. Trauma is a very difficult thing for anyone to go through. If you are going through it, please know there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that you can do these positive things after that." The CRC focuses on protecting the American Crocodile and Morelet's Crocodile, both threatened by pollution and habitat destruction. The sisters hope their story inspires others to support wildlife conservation.
