Experts have issued a warning to UK households with artificial grass as the country faces a record-breaking heatwave. The extreme temperatures can cause significant damage to fake lawns, including denting, staining, melting, or tearing of the synthetic fibres.
Colin Potts from Artificial Grass Direct explained: "Families set up paddling pools, leave bikes on the turf, and apply sunscreen without thinking about the impact on the surface beneath them. Most of these mistakes are completely avoidable with just a little know-how."
Common summer activities that damage artificial grass
Paddling pools left in the same spot for days can mat down fibres permanently due to sustained weight and suction. Trapped moisture underneath also creates conditions for mould and bacteria. Potts recommends placing pools on a flat patio area or using a ground sheet and moving the pool daily.
BBQs are another major hazard. "Coals remain dangerously hot for hours after cooking ends, and an accidentally knocked BBQ can drop hot ash directly onto the turf," Potts said. Even a spark can cause scorching. He advises positioning BBQs on patio slabs or concrete and keeping a safe distance from the lawn.
Sunscreen, food, and drink spills can also stain artificial grass, while heavy furniture and bikes can create permanent dents in hot weather.
How to protect artificial grass during summer
Artificial Grass Direct recommends the following steps to keep fake lawns in good condition:
- Brush the lawn with a stiff-bristled broom every two to three days to keep fibres upright after heavy footfall.
- Rinse with a garden hose every few days, particularly if sunscreen, food, or drink has been used in the garden.
- Move heavy garden furniture to a new spot every few weeks to prevent permanent damage.
- Clear any leaves, food debris, or dropped items promptly to prevent staining.
- Keep bird feeders positioned over paved areas, as seed residue and droppings can build up quickly in warm weather.
By following these simple precautions, homeowners can enjoy their artificial grass throughout the summer without risking costly damage.
