The event, UFC Freedom 250, marked the symbolic merger of the American presidency under Donald Trump with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
The Spectacle
Justin Gaethje, the American interim lightweight champion, stood alone in the Oval Office in his fight shorts, draped in an American flag, studying a framed Declaration of Independence before walking out to the cage. Outside the perimeter, protesters built a cardboard cage with oversized puppets of the president and his cabinet. A last-ditch legal bid to block the event failed on Friday. Critics argued that the White House, an institution belonging to the public, had spent the evening as a marketing department for a private company. Sponsor logos on the mat included Polymarket, the crypto casino Stake, a tourism campaign for Riyadh, and Bud Light. The event was broadcast on Paramount+, controlled by the billionaire Ellison family, whose patriarch Larry is a close ally of Trump.
Some fighters were due bonuses in USD1, a stablecoin from World Liberty Financial, a Trump family venture and official sponsor. A White House spokesman said there was no conflict of interest since the relevant assets sit in a trust run by the president's children.
Incidents During the Event
In a post-fight interview, fighter Josh Hokit made a false conspiracy claim: "Michelle Obama is a man," referring to the former first lady. The opening fight between Diego Lopes and Steve Garcia generated a subplot after Cormier posted, then deleted, screenshots of messages purportedly from Eric Trump asking if results were "rigged" and pressing for injury information. Both sides denied the exchange, with Eric Trump calling the messages AI-generated.
The Fights
All seven matches ended in a knockout or technical knockout. Gaethje won his fight, taking the undisputed lightweight title in one of the biggest upsets in the sport's history. After the fight, Trump entered the cage to congratulate Gaethje and greet his mother. The lawn erupted in fireworks set to John Philip Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever.
