A wildfire in Los Gallardos, Spain, has killed at least 12 people, with several bodies discovered in charred vehicles. The regional government of Andalusia confirmed the death toll rose from six to 12 after additional victims were found. Six other people sustained injuries as firefighters continue to battle the blaze.
Details of the Fire
Approximately 150 firefighters have been deployed to combat the flames in the hamlet of Bedar, near Los Gallardos. Eyewitnesses reported that the wildfire was sparked by a fallen power line, though officials have not yet confirmed the cause. The fire spread rapidly during the night, trapping victims who attempted to escape by car.
Heatwave Context
The wildfire comes amid a sustained heatwave across southern Europe, with temperatures reaching around 40°C (104°F). Similar major incidents are being battled by hundreds of firefighters in France, Portugal, and Spain, forcing thousands to evacuate their homes.
Official Response
Juanma Moreno, head of the regional government of Andalusia, called the deaths "a tragedy." Writing on X after the initial toll of six deaths was announced, he said: "Our hearts are heavy and we are devastated by grief." The statement from the regional government confirmed the rise in fatalities after six more deaths were confirmed.
