Spain's military firefighters worked through the night to halt a wildfire near Tamarite de Litera in Huesca province, where flames have scorched at least 1,000 hectares (2,470 acres). The fire prompted the Aragon regional government to declare a level 2 emergency on Thursday.
Firefighting Efforts and Evacuations
Firefighters from the military emergency unit cleared vegetation and used hoses to prevent the fire from spreading. Hundreds of people were evacuated from three municipalities as authorities sought to protect nearby communities. The blaze, which started on Thursday, threatened homes and infrastructure in the rural area.
Impact and Response
The wildfire is the latest in a series of extreme weather events affecting Europe. Spain has experienced several major wildfires this year, exacerbated by drought and high temperatures. The level 2 emergency declaration allows for coordination of resources across regional and national agencies.
