A new quiz challenges sports fans to identify which sport is taking place by sound alone, testing whether they can recognise cricket, football, rugby or hockey from audio cues. The quiz was created by Lottoland.co.uk Sportsbook following a study of 2,000 sports fans that identified the most satisfying sounds in sport.
Most Satisfying Sports Sounds Revealed
The roar of a stadium erupting after a last-gasp victory was voted the most satisfying sound in sport (42%). Finishing in second place was the thunderous roar of a Formula 1 car (27%), with the thwack of a cricket ball being perfectly struck for a six also securing 27%, according to the Daily Star.
A spokesperson for Lottoland.co.uk Sportsbook, which created the quiz and commissioned the study, stated: "Sports crowds are subtly different. However, this is what makes them so recognisable. Each atmosphere has its own distinct reactions, rhythms and chants."
Football Generates Most Enjoyable Sounds
Based on data from OnePoll.com, nearly a quarter (24%) consider football generates the most enjoyable sounds, with Formula 1 (14%) and tennis (13%) coming behind. At the other end, boxing was judged to produce the least enjoyable sounds (14%).
Four in 10 (38%) revealed that sporting sounds influenced their enjoyment of watching sport, with one in five acknowledging they have watched or listened to a sport purely because they appreciated the sound of it.
Calming Effects of Sports Sounds
Among those polled, 45% reported finding the sounds of live sport calming, with 44% considering repetitive sporting sounds such as a long tennis rally or the sound of rowing strokes particularly soothing. When questioned about why sporting sounds had such a settling effect, feeling part of something bigger (38%), the comforting atmosphere generated by the crowd (36%) and the steady rhythm of play were all highlighted as principal reasons.
Half (49%) also believe that being a sports enthusiast is not a prerequisite to appreciating the sounds of sport. Overall, six in 10 (59%) are confident they could identify major sports from the sounds of play alone.
