Poodles Top Fussiest Dog Breed List in Expert Study

A new survey by dog food brand Forthglade has identified the fussiest dog breeds, with a surprising contender taking the top spot. The study, supported by expert analysis from animal behaviorist Caroline Wilkinson, reveals that picky eating in dogs is more common than owners realize and often has underlying causes beyond stubbornness.

Top Fussiest Dog Breeds

Poodles

Poodles lead the rankings as the fussiest dog breed, scoring a perfect 10 out of 10. They received 82 mentions in Reddit discussions, with 20 directly referencing selective eating habits. Known for being clever and lively, Poodles generally show limited interest in food, accounting for 6% of survey responses.

Yorkshire Terriers

Yorkshire Terriers came in second with a score of 9.1. This small breed has firm food preferences, appearing in 12 specific references to picky eating out of 29 total mentions. Yorkies have a reduced sense of smell compared to typical dogs, making strong scents crucial for their interest in food.

Chihuahuas

Chihuahuas secured third place with a score of 7.6. They garnered 77 mentions and are known for being extraordinarily particular about texture and flavor. This breed thrives on variety and often refuses repetitive meals as a way of communicating displeasure.

Other Notable Breeds

Cavapoo

Cavapoos scored 7.2, just missing the top three. As the first Poodle crossbreed in the top 10, their pickiness may be an inherited trait. They accounted for 3% of survey responses but were frequently noted as difficult to feed on Reddit.

Labradors and Bichon Frises

Labradors and Bichon Frises tied for fifth with scores of 7 out of 10. Despite Labradors' renowned appetite, 17 comments highlighted fussy eating behaviors, and they accounted for 6% of responses. Bichon Frises flourish with variety and are influenced by scent, often rejecting meals with weak aromas.

Bernedoodles and Cockapoos

Bernedoodles and Cockapoos also made the top 10. Bernedoodles tire quickly of repetitive routines, indicating a desire for diversity. Cockapoos accumulated 19 references on Reddit and accounted for 21% of survey responses, making them notoriously selective eaters.

Caroline Wilkinson explains: "Picky eating is far more common than people realize. Dogs rarely choose not to eat to be difficult. Understanding the underlying reason, whether breed trait, texture sensitivity, or bowl location, is key to improving mealtimes."
