Pentland Hills Wildfire: Crews Tackle Blaze Near Edinburgh

Firefighters are battling a wildfire in the Pentland Hills near Edinburgh, as eastern Scotland faces a "very high" risk warning for blazes. Emergency services were first called to the incident at Torduff Reservoir on Torduff Road at 5.49pm on Thursday afternoon.

At its peak, six fire engines were deployed to the scene, with three remaining on site as of 6.30am on Friday morning. There have been no reports of any injuries. Local residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed as a precautionary measure due to smoke in the area while crews worked to bring the fire under control.

Wildfire Warning Issued for Eastern Scotland

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) and the Scottish Wildfire Forum have issued a "very high" risk of wildfire warning across eastern Scotland, effective from Friday, 29 May, until Monday, 1 June. They have urged the public within the affected areas to exercise extreme caution and refrain from lighting fires in the open over the coming days.

SFRS head of prevention deputy assistant chief officer Kenny Barbour, who is also a Scottish Wildlife Forum chairman, said: "Those in affected areas should avoid lighting outdoor fires and remain aware that even a single spark can quickly escalate, causing widespread damage.

"Taking simple precautions can help prevent devastating damage. Remember, there’s no such thing as a harmless fire. Share wildfire warnings with your family, friends, and visitors. And if anyone spots an outdoor fire, please report it immediately by calling 999, providing your location, and any other relevant information so we can respond quickly."

Impact on Landscape and Visitor Advice

Before the wildfire, a spokesperson for Pentland Hills Regional Park warned visitors that it can take years for the landscape to recover from fires. A post on social media reads: "Out of control fires can have a significant impact on fauna and flora of the landscape and takes years for it to recover.

"Visitors can help in the recovery process by avoiding walking, cycling, horse riding, running, etc. on the damaged landscape and use the waymarked paths. This will also help reduce the fire reigniting; as disturbing the ash can cause embers to reignite."
