Paddling Pool Warning Issued as 40C Heatwave Hits UK

As the UK braces for a 40°C heatwave this week, experts are warning families about potential hazards associated with paddling pools. Children's toy specialists urge parents to take extra care to ensure water safety for young children, as improperly managed pools can pose serious health risks.

Temperature Dangers for Young Children

Alex Price, product manager at Outdoortoys, emphasized that while paddling pools are a fun way to cool off, the water temperature must be carefully monitored. "While filling the pool with cold water from the hose may seem tempting, it can be too cold for babies and toddlers, who are particularly sensitive to temperature changes," he said. Cold water can lead to discomfort, chills, or even hypothermia if young children stay in it for too long.

The optimum temperature for children's paddling pools in the UK is widely regarded as between 29 and 31 degrees Celsius. Price recommends using a bath thermometer to check the water temperature. "If it's too cold, top up with warmer water or consider playing earlier in the day when temperatures are higher," he advised.

Cleaning and Maintenance Tips

Specialists also stress the importance of deep cleaning paddling pools before use, as pools stored for long periods can accumulate dust, mould, and bacteria. Price recommends a simple, child-safe cleaning method: "Mix one part white vinegar with one part warm water, then use a soft cloth or sponge to wipe down all surfaces. Pay close attention to folds, seams, and inflatable rings where dirt and mould can build up." After cleaning, rinse thoroughly with fresh water and allow the pool to fully air dry before filling.

Taking a few minutes to deep clean a paddling pool helps ensure the water stays fresh and safe for children to enjoy, according to Price. Families are urged to be extra cautious during the heatwave to prevent accidents and health issues.
