NHS GP's Heatwave Survival Guide as UK Forecast to Hit 40C

As record-breaking June temperatures continue, an NHS GP has unveiled his essential survival guide for the UK heatwave. The Met Office has already issued rarely-seen amber and red weather warnings across England and Wales, advising that some areas could experience temperatures as high as 40C on Wednesday and Thursday. The UK Health Security Agency has also issued red heat health alerts across England, cautioning of severe consequences for the general public as a result of this week's sweltering conditions.

GP's Top Tips for Staying Cool

For those finding it difficult to cope with the heat, Dr Sanam Grover may have the answers - having taken to TikTok to share his expert recommendations. "First of all, keep your windows, curtains and blinds closed during the day," he began in a video. Dr Grover stressed the particular importance of doing this with south-facing windows. "You want to trap cool air inside, then at night, open the windows on the opposite side of the house to create air flow," he advised.

The GP's second recommendation was to freeze a hot water bottle or damp towel. "Put them near your feet at night, it's a real game changer," he exclaimed. Dr Grover continued: "You can also put your face moisturiser or face mist in the fridge, then when you use them it will help with cooling."

Light Meals and Cooling Hacks

He also suggested opting for "light meals" in the heat. "Nobody needs a full roast dinner in 30-degree weather," Dr Grover said, before recommending placing a bowl of cold water or ice in front of a fan to ensure the air blown in your direction is as cool as possible. "Cold water on your pulse points - for example, your wrists, neck and armpits - will help you cool down faster," he added. "And avoid alcohol during the hotter parts of the day as this can dehydrate you more."

Check on Vulnerable People

Dr Grover rounded off with one final piece of advice - to check in on neighbours and elderly relatives. "They might be more vulnerable," he cautioned. "Also, if you notice anyone is dizzy, nauseous, has developed a headache or suddenly stopped sweating - don't ignore this as this could be heat exhaustion."

Public Reaction

One TikTok user penned in response: "Face mist in the fridge is amazing in this heat! Watermelon from the fridge is lovely in hot weather. My dog always has a bit too." A second person shared: "I have a flexible ice pack wrapped in a cotton pillowcase on the back of my neck." While a third declared: "Can confirm the frozen hot water bottle is genius!"

Relief on the Horizon

Residents across England and Wales can finally look forward to some relief from Saturday (June 27), when far more comfortable temperatures are anticipated. The Met Office has forecast temperatures dropping by as much as 15C on that day, compared to the heatwave's peak on Wednesday.
