Nandy Criticized Over Russian Tanker Interview

Culture secretary Lisa Nandy has come under fire following a Sky News interview in which she discussed the government's role in the seizure of a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker. The exchange, which some viewers described as a "car crash," has also reignited controversy over a previous interview where Nandy was accused of sexist behavior.

The UK Armed Forces intercepted a Russian oil tanker sailing under a Cameroon flag in the English Channel. Nandy was questioned by broadcaster Wilfred Frost about the operation, but her responses left many viewers unimpressed.

Government's Role in the Seizure

When asked what the Labour government had done to facilitate the operation, Nandy explained: "One of the ways that Putin is funding the war in Ukraine is to operate what he's called a Shadow Fleet, which is able to transport goods, particularly oil, through waters they would otherwise be barred from sailing."

She continued: "And this morning, what we've done is intercept one of those Shadow Fleet vessels and detained that in order to disrupt the funding source of that unlawful war. It's one of the instructions that the Prime Minister gave quite early on was that he wanted us to be on the front foot, taking that sort of decisive action in order to keep the country safe, and to deal with the threat posed by Russia."

Nandy added: "I want to pay tribute to all of the Navy officers and others who have been involved in doing this. That is no small achievement but it is also a significant blow to the Russians."

Viewer Reactions

However, viewers were quick to criticize Nandy's defense. One commentator remarked: "Classic - when the interviewer points out it’s been four years and you’ve only arrested one solitary tanker, she says yes and that demonstrates how seriously we are taking this threat. So, arguably not at all... I would love to know how many shadow fleet vessels have sailed blissfully past under the cliffs of Dover since 2023."

Another viewer noted: "Savvy Trevor Phillips takes the day off and leaves Wilfred Frost to hand village idiot Lisa Nandy her arse on a plate, he asks her if there are 700 vessels in the Russian Shadow Fleet how come the UK has stopped an awe-inspiring ONE of them in four years. She says that shows how serious Keir Starmer's government is on the matter."

A third added: "These politicians are crazy, its non stop day after day drivvle! Telling the nation we stopped one of 700 ships of Russia yet not stopped one of thousands upon thousands of migrant boats invading our actual shores? How do they think we should react with this news?"

Background of the Controversy

This is not the first time Nandy has faced scrutiny over her media appearances. Earlier, she was branded "sexist" during a Sky News interview where she appeared to lose her temper, allegedly for being interviewed by a man and asked to give views on several men in the Labour Party. That incident drew angry reactions from viewers who watched her keep a straight face while speaking with Frost.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman confirmed that the operation occurred in international waters, more than 12 nautical miles from the UK coast, and was the result of weeks of military and political planning. The seizure is part of broader efforts to disrupt Russian funding for the war in Ukraine.
