Minnesota Wildfires Prompt State of Emergency and National Guard Deployment
Minnesota Wildfires: State of Emergency Declared

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has declared a peacetime state of emergency in response to rapidly spreading wildfires that erupted over the weekend, authorizing the deployment of the National Guard to assist firefighting and evacuation efforts.

Emergency Declaration

Walz issued the executive order on Sunday after fires broke out in Crow Wing County and Two Harbors, fueled by dry and windy conditions. 'Unpredictable and fast-moving wildfires are putting communities at risk,' Walz stated, according to the Guardian. 'This emergency declaration ensures we can fully mobilize the resources needed to protect lives, support evacuations, and help communities respond and recover.' The order will remain in effect until conditions improve or June 7.

National Guard Role

According to Fox9, the National Guard will aid in evacuations, recovery, and the distribution of state resources. Walz expressed gratitude on social media, writing, 'Grateful to all those stepping into harm's way to keep their neighbors safe.'

Fire Status and Impact

The Flanders Fire in Crow Wing County has burned approximately 1,600 acres and was only 20 percent contained as of Sunday evening, per CBS. Crow Wing County Sheriff Eric Klang reported that 30 people were displaced, but no primary residences were destroyed. A wildfire shelter was established at the Crosslake Community Center. Crosslake Mayor Jackson Purfeerst thanked the community for its support, stating, 'We are truly blessed with an incredible community.'

In Two Harbors, about two hours northeast, the fire was 62 percent contained after burning over 350 acres. Lake County Sheriff Nathan Stadler confirmed that 34 structures, including eight primary buildings, were destroyed. 'We know that this situation is stressful for residents, visitors, everybody involved, and our teams are working around the clock to keep people safe,' he said.

Road Closures and Safety Measures

Several roads were shut down, including sections of US Highway 61, Highway 106, and County Road 11. Officials attributed the fires to red flag conditions issued for 15 Minnesota counties on Saturday, warning of high fire risk and urging residents to avoid debris burning. No major injuries or deaths have been reported. Strong wind gusts up to 15 mph and changing weather patterns could complicate containment efforts. A temporary flight restriction was imposed over Minnesota.

Community Response

Minnesota-based non-profit Bridges of Hope announced it would coordinate assistance for affected households. 'We're actively preparing our response and coordinating next steps with community partners,' the organization posted on social media. Walz previously deployed the National Guard for wildfires in April and May last year, which scorched over 40,000 acres and destroyed 150 structures.
