The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the Highlands and Strathclyde regions, cautioning that heavy rainfall from 5pm today could lead to flooding, travel disruption, and power cuts across Scotland. This warning comes even as a third heatwave is expected to approach the UK later this week.
Regions Affected and Timing
The warning covers the Highlands and Eilean Siar, as well as Strathclyde, Argyll and Bute. The heaviest and most persistent rain is expected from Sunday afternoon through to Monday morning, with conditions easing by late Monday morning. Scattered showers are also forecast for much of northern England and parts of Wales on Monday.
Expected Rainfall Amounts
According to the Met Office forecast, 20-40 mm of rain is expected widely within the warning area, with 50-75 mm in the most mountainous regions. There is a chance that the most exposed spots could see close to 100 mm. This substantial rainfall poses risks of flooding and difficult driving conditions.
Potential Impacts
The Met Office has warned that public transport, including bus and rail services, may face disruption, with journey times likely to increase. Drivers should prepare for challenging conditions on the roads. Additionally, there is a risk of power cuts. A Met Office statement advised: "People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It's easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items."
Contrast with Approaching Heatwave
Meanwhile, another heatwave is heading towards the UK, with temperatures potentially reaching 34°C in the South East by Thursday or Friday. Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell said: "We have got a heatwave on the way across parts of southern England and Wales. There will be highs of 29°C tomorrow (Sunday) in the south. At the start of next week we will see temperatures approach the low 30s. The peak of the heat appears to be Thursday or Friday, 34°C in the South East. By comparison to the heatwave we saw in June, this heatwave won't be as hot and humid, but it will be a prolonged spell of hot weather which lasts around a week."
Weather charts from WXCharts indicate that sections of Britain could endure 30°C or higher for six consecutive days from Tuesday through to Sunday. Despite the incoming heat, the current focus remains on the heavy rain and its immediate impacts across northern Scotland.
