London Marathon May Shift to Earlier Date Due to Rising Temperatures
London Marathon Could Move Date Due to Climate Change

London Marathon Events CEO Hugh Brasher has indicated that the iconic race could be moved to an earlier calendar slot to address the challenges posed by increasing temperatures during the British spring. The decision is driven by concerns for runner experience and the potential for faster race times, following recent events where participants faced high temperatures, including 22°C in 2025 and a record 24.2°C in 2018.

Climate Concerns Prompt Review

Brasher confirmed that the organisation is actively monitoring global practices, such as the Paris Marathon's recent ban on single-use water cups, as part of their ongoing sustainability and health and safety considerations. The London Marathon already implements significant sustainability measures, including a mandatory carbon removal tax for international participants and a circular system for recycled plastic water bottles provided along the course.

Historical Context and Future Plans

Brasher acknowledged that while the world is heating up, moving the marathon's date is a serious consideration, noting that the event historically took place in late March. The potential shift aims to ensure optimal conditions for runners and maintain the race's reputation as a premier global event.
