Spiders won't come near your home if you wipe doors with natural item — not vinegar
Keep spiders away by wiping doors with lavender oil, not vinegar

As autumn approaches, UK households can expect the annual return of spider season. While most spiders found in British homes are harmless, many people prefer to keep them out without using harsh chemicals. A cleaning expert on social media suggests that wiping doors with a single common ingredient — lavender oil — is a highly effective natural deterrent.

Lavender oil as a natural spider repellent

Chantel Mila, an Australia-based cleaning specialist, shared a TikTok video outlining five cleaning hacks that "everyone should know, but no one ever teaches you." One tip focused on keeping spiders away using entirely natural methods. She recommends wiping doors, door frames, and other obvious entry points with lavender oil. Just a few drops on a cloth produce a scent potent enough to discourage spiders from venturing inside.

While the aroma is pleasant to humans, spiders find it repellent. The experts at Snug Scent explain that lavender oil's potent aroma serves as a natural repellent. They added: "Using lavender oil in a diffuser or as a spray around the home not only keeps spiders at bay but also provides a calming environment for you and your family. It's perfect for bedrooms and other areas where you seek relaxation and peace."

Why spiders avoid lavender

Daniel Steward, managing director at Shield Pest Control, explains that spiders dislike lavender's sweet yet sharp floral scent. He said: "Lavender's aroma disrupts spiders' ability to track scent trails, which they use for navigation and communication. This confusion makes it harder for spiders to find safe nesting locations, discouraging them from staying in the area. Furthermore, some compounds in lavender oil have mild insect-repellent properties, adding to its effectiveness."

Other natural deterrents

Lavender is not the only option. Peppermint oil is equally effective, according to a 2018 study that found "volatiles released by mint oil and chestnuts may be effective in deterring spider settlement in two different families of spiders." A homemade spray can be made by combining a few drops of peppermint oil with water and washing-up liquid, then applied around windows and doors.

Citrus fragrances such as orange and lime also disorient spiders. Mixing citrus oil with white vinegar and water creates another potent deterrent that can be applied wherever needed.
