The UK is set to experience a 'godzilla' El Niño towards the end of 2026, which could be the strongest on record, bringing strong winds and storms that may cause devastation across Britain. In response, the government is urging residents to prepare a 'grab bag' for potential evacuations.
Flood Risk and Preparation
The National Flood Risk Assessment indicates that 6.3 million properties in England alone are currently at risk of flooding from rivers, the sea, or surface water. To prepare, residents can use a government online service to check if their home is in a long-term flood risk area and sign up for flood warnings by phone or email.
The government advises moving sentimental or valuable items upstairs or to high places, familiarising yourself with how to turn off gas, electricity, and water, and storing important documents in resealable water-tight plastic bags. In the event of a fire, never stop to get your grab bag; get yourself and your family to safety immediately.
Essential Grab Bag Items
The government's Prepare campaign provides a comprehensive list of items to pack. These include a wind-up or battery-powered torch, a portable power bank, a battery-powered or wind-up radio, and spare batteries. A first aid kit and prescribed medication are also must-haves, along with hand sanitiser and wet wipes in case clean water is unavailable.
Bottled water is fundamental. The government states: 'There is no standard figure for this as emergencies can vary in duration and people use different amounts. A minimum of 2.5-3 litres of drinking water per person per day is recommended by the World Health Organisation for survival. But 10 litres per person per day will make you more comfortable, by also providing for basic cooking and hygiene needs. Additional water might be needed to make up baby formula, for medical devices and for pets.'
Food, Pets, and Baby Supplies
Pack ready-to-eat tinned food, including meats, fruits, and vegetables, along with a tin-opener. Pet owners should include food for their animals. Baby supplies such as nappies and formula are also essential, with the website stating: 'Ready made or “ready-to-feed” formula is best as you may not be able to boil water or sterilise bottles.'
Finally, include warm, dry waterproof clothing and important documents and contacts in a sealed bag. Ensure everything is kept in date and batteries are charged. This preparation aims to make evacuations as seamless as possible during potential emergencies.
