The GoSun Sport-E solar oven elevates solar cooking from a novelty to a genuinely useful appliance with its unique hybrid design. Unlike traditional solar cookers that rely solely on sunlight, this compact oven includes an electric heating element powered by a 12V DC input, allowing it to cook even when the sun isn't shining.
Design and Features
The GoSun Sport-E resembles a large glass tube with two wing-like mirrors that unfold to capture sunlight. The tube walls are vacuum-insulated, similar to a Stanley mug, to retain heat. The outer wall is clear, while the inner wall features a blackened copper coating that absorbs and radiates heat inward. An electric heating element in the bottom tray provides backup power, and the copper lining ensures even heat distribution. Food slides into a long scoop-shaped tray, which holds 36 ounces—enough to feed two people comfortably. For larger groups, GoSun offers the Fusion model with more than double the capacity.
In the box, you receive the solar oven with an attached sundial, a hybrid electric cooking tray, a cleaning brush, a power cord, a carrying case, and eight silicone baking cups. The oven weighs 7 pounds and measures 29 by 12 by 6 inches.
Performance Testing
When packed, the Sport-E's reflectors wrap around the glass tube, making it easy to carry. The handle doubles as legs, and the reflectors unfold to capture 338 square inches of sunlight. While this is smaller than some parabolic mirrors, the Sport-E is more reliable and manageable. In testing, the oven reached up to 550°F in ideal conditions, but a more realistic expectation in Canada was around 350°F. Despite the lower temperature, it was hot enough to steam potatoes, cook quinoa, stir-fry vegetables, and bake bread and brownies. GoSun recommends using a meat thermometer to ensure food reaches a safe internal temperature.
What We Love
The Sport-E is designed for real-world conditions. Setting it up is simple: unfold the solar reflectors and tilt the base so the shadow dot aligns with the sundial indicator. This ensures the oven faces the sun directly for maximum heat collection. The vacuum-insulated design retains heat well, even in less-than-ideal conditions like late winter with snow on the ground.
The electric mode is a standout feature. Drawing just 100 watts, the Sport-E can run from a car's accessory plug or a portable battery pack. During a stormy power outage, the author used the electric mode to bake eight small bread loaves, using less than 5% of a DJI Power 1000 Mini battery. On a clear day at the beach, the oven cooked vegan kebabs with an ocean view, demonstrating clean and portable cooking.
What We Don't Love
While practical, the Sport-E requires attention to conditions. Wind can push the upper reflector forward, but a binder clip and cord can secure it. Speed is a limitation: the oven warms up quickly but never reaches temperatures suitable for roasting, and a grill or camp stove is usually faster. The tube shape requires preplanning—for example, making small bread loaves instead of one large loaf, and dicing potatoes instead of roasting them whole.
Is It Worth It?
The GoSun Sport-E is a novel and eco-friendly way to prepare hot meals outdoors or during power outages. Its hybrid design solves the main problem with solar cooking by providing backup electric power, and the insulated construction reaches real oven heat. This makes it a tool you'll use repeatedly, not just a gadget that sits on the shelf.
