Good Morning Britain meteorologist Laura Tobin has addressed viewer criticism over the show's extensive coverage of the ongoing heatwave, defending the decision to focus on weather updates as the UK faces record-breaking temperatures.
During Wednesday's edition of the ITV programme, hosts Ranvir Singh and Ed Balls were joined by Tobin in the studio to discuss the severe weather warnings issued by the Met Office. The forecaster has warned of "population-wide adverse health effects" and "potential serious illness or danger to life," urging the public to adjust working practices and daily routines.
Viewers React to Weather-Focused Show
Not all viewers were impressed by the heavy focus on the heat. One fumed: "It's the summer, get on with it." Another wrote: "I bet other countries are laughing at this - those where this heat is quite normal." A third commented: "#gmb love to cause panic," while another added: "#GMB getting themselves into a right state over the weather. Utterly pathetic. It's gonna be back down to 20° next week. We've become, as a country, an absolute shambles."
Some viewers were more dismissive: "It'll all be over by next week, and then we'll be straight back to complaining that it's too cold," and "FFS just go to Argos and buy a fan." One said: "I never moan about the heat. I just dress and act accordingly." Another sarcastically wrote: "Oh no, we're all doomed," and one viewer exclaimed: "This programme is a f**king joke, it's SUMMER it's lasts for 2 weeks then it's gone, do you think we are all f**king stupid that we need warnings about the heat."
Laura Tobin Defends Coverage
However, some viewers came to Tobin's defence, with one saying: "Laura is saving lives." Tobin herself hit back at the criticism during the broadcast, stating: "I understand that a lot of people say, 'you're just being a party pooper, this is just hot weather,' but we are talking about records that we have never reached. Temperatures that we've never, ever experienced before. So it's hard to imagine what the impact of the day is going to be because we've never experienced what we're going to see over the next three days."
Earlier in the show, Ranvir Singh had asked Tobin: "In a way you were hoping this would never come and now it's here. Am I catastrophising, am I being dramatic? Am I being Hollywood about it?" Tobin replied by highlighting the rarity of the Met Office's red extreme heat warning, noting it is only the second time such a warning has been issued. She said: "They're so rare because we know when we issue them, we mean people will lose their lives, it will cause fatalities and the Met Office issue it with a heavy heart knowing that will be the case, and we say it with a heavy heart."
Tobin added: "Just worth saying, only half the world has early warnings, half the world can't get warm when extreme weather happens, the fact that we have warnings to tell people to change their travel plans and schools, it means we are already saving lives by doing this." She concluded: "I was taught as a junior forecaster to never forecast a record because they've stood for so long for a reason. We are breaking and smashing records."
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
