GMB Hosts Urge Aid After Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Rises

Ed Balls and Ranvir Singh returned to the ITV studio on Wednesday (July 1) to host Good Morning Britain, where they shared an urgent appeal following the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela. The death toll from last week's earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, has risen to 1,943, with more than 10,000 people injured and tens of thousands more unaccounted for.

According to an initial assessment of satellite data from Nasa, the massive tremors have likely damaged or destroyed 58,870 buildings. The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), which coordinates individual charities, launched an urgent appeal to raise funds for those affected.

Devastating Impact and Rescue Efforts

Jonathan Swain reported on the earthquake's devastating impact, stating: "The two earthquakes flattened buildings and devastated infrastructure. According to the UN, there are widespread food shortages in La Guaira, near the capital Caracas. Two million people are in urgent need of help. A third of those are children. Basic services like power, water and shelter are all severely limited."

Rescue efforts continue, with a three-year-old boy rescued alive from the rubble six days after the earthquake. However, around 50,000 people remain missing. Rescue workers from around the world, including the UK, are on the ground under very difficult circumstances.

DEC Chief Executive Urges Support

An appeal video from the DEC was played, followed by an interview with Chief Executive Saleh Saeed. He explained: "We've seen the sheer devastation the earthquake has caused. What's really worrying is some 40,000 to 50,000 people are still missing. People potentially still stuck under the rubble. Time's already running out for many, but our focus now is about helping the survivors. Two million people in the worst affected areas have been impacted, so this appeal today has been launched to get aid to those people as quickly as possible."

Ed Balls highlighted the scale of the crisis: "We saw harrowing scenes of people being rescued. 40,000 to 50,000 still missing, so the death toll is going to rise hugely, but it's actually the millions of people who are going to be still alive but without homes, without food, without shelter." Saleh Saeed confirmed: "We're trying to reach people to ensure they've got safe shelter and access to clean water."

Public Reaction and How to Help

Viewers shared their heartbreak on social media, with one writing: "A 3-year-old boy is buried under the rubble for 6 DAYS in Venezuela, no parents, no water, no food. Imagine how absolutely terrified that boy will feel. It puts life into perspective."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 6am. More information can be found on the Disasters Emergency Committee website.
