The British Red Cross has recommended an unconventional method to keep cool during a heatwave: placing a pair of socks in the fridge and slipping them on before bed. This tip aims to reduce core body temperature by cooling the feet, a strategy supported by research showing that cold water applied to the feet can lower overall body heat.
How the Fridge Sock Method Works
Dr Allie Hare, president of the British Sleep Society, endorses a variation: putting lightly damp socks in the freezer for about 10 minutes before bedtime. The cold socks help dissipate heat from the feet, which are rich in blood vessels, thereby cooling the entire body. This technique is particularly useful during hot weather when sleep becomes difficult.
Additional Red Cross Heatwave Sleep Tips
The Red Cross also advises sleeping on the lowest level of your home, as heat rises. Wearing minimal clothing and turning off electrical devices that generate heat are recommended. Avoiding alcohol and caffeine in the evening is crucial, as they can disrupt sleep quality. Staying hydrated with water and taking a lukewarm or cool shower before bed can further lower body temperature.
These tips come as the UK experiences rising temperatures, with many struggling to sleep comfortably. The Red Cross emphasizes that simple adjustments can make a significant difference in managing heatwave conditions.
