Four British Tourists Dead in Spanish Wildfire Trapped in Car

Four British nationals are among at least 11 people killed in devastating wildfires sweeping through southern Spain, officials have confirmed. The victims were found inside a burnt-out car with the steering wheel on the right-hand side, indicating British origin, according to Antonio Sanz, Andalusia’s health and emergencies minister.

Victims Found in Burnt-Out Vehicle

The bodies were discovered near the village of Bédar in the province of Almeria, Andalucia. Seven other victims are believed to be foreign tourists who died after abandoning their cars and attempting to escape the flames on foot through rugged terrain. Sanz stated: 'The decision to take another route instead of the designated evacuation route became a fatal trap.' He added that the victims were caught off guard by the 'very fast-moving fire, with an extremely high rate of spread,' as reported by El Pais.

Ongoing Search and Evacuations

A further 19 people remain missing, while over 600 people were evacuated in Los Gallardos. The southern province remains under an alert due to the Los Gallardos wildfires. The region is enduring a heatwave similar to the UK's, with temperatures exceeding 30°C for weeks. Firefighting efforts are hampered by bone-dry conditions and strong winds.
