The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has confirmed it is in contact with Spanish authorities following reports that four British nationals may have died in a wildfire in Andalusia. The bodies were discovered in a burnt-out car with right-hand drive, indicating British origin, according to Antonio Sanz, Andalusia’s health and emergencies minister.
Government Response
Downing Street described the reports as “concerning” and said the Government was seeking more information. A No 10 spokeswoman stated: “I’m aware of those reports and the Foreign Office are in touch with the relevant authorities in Spain.” The fire has affected more than 3,000 hectares near Los Gallardos, Almería.
FCDO Advice for Travellers
In an update on Friday, the FCDO urged those in the affected area to follow four steps: follow instructions from local authorities and emergency services at all times; avoid travelling into or through the affected area; follow updates from the emergency services; and call 112 in an emergency.
The FCDO added: “If you are concerned about someone in the area, call this helpline +34 677 904 624 provided by the Psychological Intervention Group for Emergencies and Disasters (GIPED). English-speaking staff are available. If you or a family member have been affected and need consular assistance, call +34 917 146 300. If you are in the UK, call +44 (0)20 7008 5000.”
