The UK is bracing for temperatures close to 40C this week, the hottest since July 2022, prompting the Met Office to issue red heat alerts for Wednesday and Thursday. In response, the RAC has advised drivers to carry eight essential items in their vehicles to stay safe during the extreme heat.
Essential Items for Your Car
According to the RAC, the must-have items include water for the driver and all passengers to maintain hydration, as well as snacks that won't melt in the heat. Additionally, hats and umbrellas are recommended to shield against the sun, alongside sunscreen and any emergency medication required. A fully charged phone is crucial for emergencies, and drivers should download and log into their breakdown service app for quick assistance if needed.
Pet owners are also advised to bring supplies for their animals, including a means of securing pets if they must leave the car, along with sufficient water and food for them.
Tyre Safety Warning
Alongside the RAC's guidance, drivers have been warned to check their tyre pressures before Thursday, as high temperatures can cause air inside tyres to expand, affecting vehicle safety. Steve Howat, a technical expert at Continental, emphasised the importance of regular tyre checks during a heatwave. “Most drivers don’t think about their tyres when a heatwave is happening, but very high temperatures can have a direct impact on tyre pressure,” he said.
Howat explained that incorrect tyre pressure can compromise grip, fuel economy, safety, and braking distance. In extreme conditions, it may lead to uneven tyre wear, reduced handling, and even blowouts. He advised using a reliable pressure gauge and adjusting pressure for additional loads, referring to the vehicle plate or handbook for recommended levels.
Broader Heatwave Impact
With temperatures expected to reach near 40C, the red heat alerts warn of potential health risks, travel disruptions, and increased demand on emergency services. Drivers are urged to plan journeys carefully, stay hydrated, and ensure their vehicles are prepared for the heat.
