Firefighters are set to remain at the moorland blaze near Dovestone reservoir until at least this weekend, as operations to contain the fire and prevent flare-ups continue for five more days.
Operation scaling back
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said it was scaling back its effort, with resources from other parts of the country being discharged, but the operation to contain the fire and prevent flare-ups would continue for at least five more days.
Crews have been tackling the fire near Dovestone Reservoir in Greenfield, Oldham, since last Saturday, with a nearby area of moorland at Swineshaw also alight. The operation to contain another moorland blaze at Tintwistle is also continuing, forcing the closure of the A628 Woodhead Pass until next week.
Fire service statement
A statement from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters and partner agencies remain deployed at Dovestone and Swineshaw, with ongoing operations focused on managing hotspots, maintaining containment and preventing any further spread across the affected moorland."
"Around 10 fire appliances remain in operation during the day, with resources reducing overnight. National resilience resources have now been released, with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service retaining the personnel and specialist capability needed to continue operations. Current plans are to maintain resources through the week and into the weekend, with ongoing dry weather continuing to present operational challenges."
Public urged to stay away
"It is imperative that members of the public stay away from affected areas, keep access routes clear and avoid activities that could start further fires, including the use of disposable BBQs, campfires and naked flames on moorland."
"Smoke may still be visible in some locations depending on weather conditions and wind direction. Residents affected by smoke should continue to follow public health advice and monitor the latest air quality information."
Tintwistle fire and road closure
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said it had 75 firefighters tackling a separate moorland fire at Tintwistle today, supported by three helicopters. The A628 Woodhead Pass between Manchester and Sheffield remains closed until at least next Monday.
The brigade said in an update: "We are urging people to support our crews by staying away from affected areas and avoiding any activities that could start further fires, including the use of BBQs, campfires and naked flames on moorland."
