Dishwashers can develop unpleasant odours if not properly maintained, but a cleaning fan has shared a simple, natural solution that requires no harsh chemicals. The method uses white vinegar, a common household ingredient, to banish musty smells and improve appliance efficiency.
Why Dishwashers Develop Odours
When dishwashers are not cleaned regularly, food residue, grease, soap scum, and bacteria can build up, leading to foul smells. Other causes include a clogged filter or drain, or leftover residue hiding in the dishwasher seals. According to cleaning experts, these issues can also reduce the appliance's performance.
The White Vinegar Method
TikTok creator Kat (@cleanwithKat) recommends filling a bowl with one cup of white vinegar and placing it on the top rack of the dishwasher. Then, run a regular cycle. The acetic acid in vinegar neutralises alkaline compounds from old food particles and grime, while also breaking down greasy residues. The heat of the cycle helps dissolve hard water deposits and wash away mould or mildew spores.
Dr Beckmann, a cleaning product manufacturer, noted: "The acid in vinegar can help remove limescale from your dishwasher, but if it's too concentrated, it may damage rubber seals and other sensitive parts. Also, be prepared for the strong, lingering smell vinegar leaves after cleaning."
Experts Warn Against Alternatives
While white vinegar is effective, experts caution against using apple cider vinegar or lemon juice. Consumer site Which? stated in an Instagram post: "Do not chuck in apple cider vinegar or lemon juice; it's a quality piece of engineering, not a fish supper." Currys, however, suggested apple cider vinegar as an alternative if white vinegar is unavailable, but warned it could damage rubber seals and discolour metal.
CNET added: "Be aware that vinegar can break down the rubber gaskets and hoses in your dishwasher, leading to costly damage. On top of that, if vinegar mixes with salt that's been left on your dishes, it can discolor metal pans, flatware and mixing bowls." They advise against putting vinegar in the rinse aid dispenser.
Additional Tips for a Fresh Dishwasher
Regular maintenance is key to preventing odours. Cleaning the filter, running a hot cycle with a dishwasher cleaner, and wiping down seals can help. Using high-quality dishwasher tablets also reduces residue buildup. For natural freshness, some recommend sprinkling baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher before a short cycle, but this should not be combined with vinegar as it neutralises the effect.
