Local authorities could do more to help households with the cost of living, particularly by supporting rooftop solar installations, according to Councillor Lucy Shaw. Writing in response to a recent Guardian editorial, Shaw argues that while national action is needed, local policies also play a crucial role.
Shaw highlights that Kensington and Chelsea, the wealthiest borough in the country, has the lowest rooftop solar installation rate at just 0.6% of households, despite having policies to ease solar development in conservation areas. She suggests that coordinating installations by street, simplifying permitting rules, and installing solar on council-owned rooftops could reduce costs.
Other local measures include offering discounted public electric vehicle charging during off-peak hours, especially where most cars are parked on the street. Partnering with housing associations, charities, and energy suppliers to help residents access energy efficiency services and government grants could also provide relief.
Shaw concludes that while national fiscal intervention may be necessary, local governments can do much more to support constituents by making it easier to invest in homes and streets.
