Cool Your Bedroom Without a Fan: British Gas Shares Simple Step to Beat the Heat
Cool Your Bedroom Without a Fan: British Gas Simple Step

Keeping a bedroom cool during a heatwave does not require a fan. British Gas recommends a straightforward method: keep windows shut during the hottest part of the day, then open them in the evening to let warm air escape.

Why Fans May Not Be the Answer

During a heatwave, many people rely on fans for relief, but they can be disruptive at night and often just circulate warm air. Instead, British Gas advises creating cross-ventilation by closing off unoccupied rooms during the day and opening doors and windows when temperatures drop.

Last month was England's hottest June on record, with the mercury reaching 37.7°C on June 26 in Lingwood, Norfolk. Forecasts suggest temperatures could climb to the low-to-mid 30s across England and Wales in the coming days.

Step-by-Step Cooling Routine

British Gas stated: "Tempting as it might be to throw your windows open during a heatwave, leaving them shut when the day is at its hottest will keep rooms cool in summer. So try to only let in the air early, or late, in the day."

In the evening, open internal doors and windows on opposite sides of the home to encourage airflow. This allows warm air inside to escape and be replaced by cooler outdoor air. For flats with windows on only one side, opening internal doors and running a fan can help circulate air.

Removing Trapped Hot Air

Since heat rises, opening skylights or loft windows is important to let warm air escape from upper floors. British Gas added: "Otherwise, it can get trapped on the second floor. As that's where bedrooms tend to be, it can make them too hot to sleep in comfortably."

This simple bedtime routine can significantly improve sleep quality during periods of high temperatures, without the need for any appliances.
