Clean Grout Naturally with Baking Soda in 10 Mins

Dirt and grime can build up over time on grout, but a simple method using baking soda can brighten grout lines without resorting to bleach. Grout, the white lines between tiles, is porous and absorbs moisture, creating ideal conditions for mould. Once mould spores penetrate grout, they are stubborn to shift, and bleach often only tackles surface mould, causing tiles to break down.

Natural Solution from the Kitchen Cupboard

Jayden Copeland, a cleaning expert behind Backroad Bloom, recommends baking soda as an effective solution. She explains: "Because of its abrasive texture, baking soda is great at removing dirt and build-up. It's not too abrasive, though, so it shouldn't cause any damage to your tile or grout. It's a mild alkali, which means it can cause dirt and grease to dissolve easily in water, so it can be wiped up and removed."

Baking soda consists of fine particles that penetrate deep into grout, scrubbing away mould, soap residue, and grime. When combined with other cleaners, it helps them penetrate more deeply to eliminate all traces of mould. Mould thrives in acidic settings, but baking soda's alkalinity creates less favourable conditions.

How to Clean Grout with Baking Soda

You will need: one tablespoon of baking soda, two tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide (3%), and two teaspoons of washing-up liquid. Hydrogen peroxide is a gentler substitute for bleach that dissolves mould stains and lightens grout without harmful vapours. Washing-up liquid strips grease and removes soap residue that mould feeds on.

Method: Combine one part baking soda, two parts hydrogen peroxide, and two teaspoons of washing-up liquid in a small bowl. Wear gloves and blend until a paste forms. Apply the paste to grout and work it in. Allow it to sit for five to 10 minutes to eliminate mould spores. Then, use a soft-bristled brush or old toothbrush to gently scrub. Dirt and mould should lift off easily, leaving tiles gleaming with minimal effort.
