Cairngorms park officials have announced that the large-scale wildfire affecting the region is now 'largely surrounded', and they expect evacuated residents to be able to return home later today. The fire, which burned approximately four square kilometres at its peak, is now largely under control as of Sunday afternoon.
Ongoing Efforts and Resources
The park authority stated that the incident remains ongoing, with fire crews and partner agencies continuing to tackle the blaze. Resources such as helicopter support have been crucial in fighting the fire in difficult-to-reach areas. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) still has six fire appliances, two all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), a wildfire support unit, and a water carrier at the scene.

Gavin Miles, director of planning and place at the park authority, said: 'News from Glenmore this morning is very encouraging, with colleagues from SFRS indicating that the fire is now largely surrounded. This is, though, still a live situation and teams are still very active on the ground, so we are taking nothing for granted at this stage.' He added, 'We’re really grateful for the continued efforts of everyone helping fight the fire in Glenmore, and for the co-operation of local residents, visitors and businesses at what I know is a very difficult time.'
Access Restrictions and Public Safety
Miles noted that the Ski Road and surrounding areas are likely to remain off-limits for some time due to the number of personnel and machinery on-site. However, officials are hopeful that residents and campers directly affected by the exclusion zone will be able to gain access later today. The SFRS spokesperson emphasized that while progress has been significant, wildfires can change rapidly and unexpectedly, urging the public not to become complacent.
Road Closures and Support for Displaced Residents
Police Scotland has provided updated information for local residents and members of the public displaced by the wildfire. The area remains closed to visitors, and road closures are still in effect.
