Woman refuses neighbour's demand to move garden for dog

A woman has shared her disbelief after her neighbour demanded she move her vegetable garden because it was causing her dog to bark incessantly. The woman, who considers her vegetable patch her 'happy place', was told by the neighbour that the location of the garden was too close to their shared fence and was upsetting the dog.

Neighbour's unusual request

In a post on Reddit, the woman explained that her neighbour knocked on her door and instructed her to 'do something' about her garden because 'my dog doesn't like it'. Initially, she thought the neighbour wanted her to physically relocate her entire outdoor space, but it soon became clear the issue was specifically with her vegetable patch, which is currently 'small but thriving' with tomatoes, peppers, and strawberries.

The neighbour reportedly said: 'My dog doesn't like it. Every time he looks at it, he starts barking like crazy. He doesn't do that anywhere else. I think it's the smell of your compost, or maybe just the way it looks, whatever. Can you move it back a little so it's more hidden and he doesn't see it?'

Woman's response and neighbour's warning

The woman suggested the dog would eventually 'get used to' the new smell, but the neighbour remained adamant that the vegetables needed to be relocated to a different corner of her garden. The neighbour then warned: 'The barking makes everything so uncomfortable. He barks really loudly because of your garden, and it's going to inconvenience other neighbours. Do you want to cause problems in the neighbourhood?'

Days later, the woman learned from another neighbour that the dog owner had confronted them about the barking and blamed the woman, claiming she 'refused to cooperate'. The woman remarked: 'So apparently, my tomatoes are now the local menace.'

Online reactions

Commenters on the post were equally perplexed by the demand, with many advising the woman not to move her garden. One individual remarked: 'As if you can just roll the damn thing up and move it. You better wash those tomatoes off really well before you eat them. Why do stupid people have to ruin everything?' Another said: 'Just say no. The dog will get over it. Dogs take three to six months to adjust to environmental changes, unless the owner caters to the dog.'

The incident highlights the delicate balance of neighbourly relations, where requests can range from reasonable to absurd, and how a simple vegetable patch can become a source of contention.
