Store Potatoes with an Apple to Keep Them Sprout-Free for Months
Store Potatoes with an Apple for Months of Freshness

Wheeldon Brothers, waste management specialists, have shared a simple tip to keep potatoes fresh for months: store them with an apple. The apple emits ethylene gas, which slows sprouting in potatoes, reducing food waste.

How the Apple Trick Works

The experts explained: "Ethylene gas helps regulate the ripening process, which can slow sprouting in potatoes." This method, popular on social media, pairs best with proper storage conditions: a cool, dark, and dry location.

Fridge Storage Recommended

Contrary to traditional cupboard storage, experts now advocate refrigerator storage, which can extend freshness "up to three times longer." They added: "Earlier concerns about acrylamide formation have been debunked, and modern research shows that fridge storage is safe." However, they advise regularly checking for sprouting or green patches, which can contain harmful toxins.

Avoid Plastic Bags

To further extend shelf life, avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture and accelerate spoilage.

Long-Term Storage Method

YouTuber Tracy Tips shared a four-step process to keep raw potatoes fresh for up to 12 months: place dry paper in a cardboard box, layer potatoes with kitchen towel between them, sprinkle baking powder over the surface ("Using baking soda helps absorb moisture effectively and limits sprouting"), add another tissue layer, seal the lid, and store away from sunlight and moisture.
