April is the critical time to prevent wasps from nesting in your home or garden, as queen wasps emerge from hibernation and begin building new nests. These early nests are often small, roughly the size of a golf ball, and found in protected spots like lofts, eaves, sheds or wall cavities.
Gardening guru Ish, known as Gardening With Ish on TikTok, has shared a simple method to deter wasps using a plastic bag and string. By folding a plastic bag into a point and tying it with string, you can create a fake wasps' nest. Wasps are highly territorial, so hanging this decoy in your garden, shed or garage will make them think another nest is nearby, causing them to stay away.
Ish explained: "If you want to prevent wasps from making a nest in your home, your shed, your garage or even your garden then this is going to blow your mind. All I've got is a plastic bag and some string." He added that spring is an ideal time to deploy the decoy, as it encourages wasps to nest elsewhere without being aggressive on your deck or patio.
This method does not stop wasps from making nests entirely, but it pushes them further away, reducing their presence in key areas. The decoy also allows wasps to continue pollinating your garden without descending as a swarm. A bin bag works well, but other bags can be used too.
Crafting a decoy wasps' nest is widely regarded as an effective deterrent for territorial wasps. Now is the perfect time to hang them from trees or near porches to keep your outdoor space wasp-free this summer.
