Rats are not just a winter problem. Summer heat can drive them indoors, just like cold weather, as they seek food, water, and shelter. Gardens with fruit trees or barbecues provide ideal food sources, making homes vulnerable year-round.
Cheap and Effective Solution
Saif Derzi, founder of Property Buyers Today, warns: "Many homeowners will be surprised that rats only need a gap of around 20mm, roughly the size of a £1 coin, to gain access to a property." He advises checking for gaps around pipes, cables, damaged air bricks, cracks in walls and foundations, and broken drains.
To block these entry points, steel wool is a highly effective deterrent. A pack of three from Asda costs just £1.08, working out to 36p per piece. The dense, abrasive wires are impossible for rodents to chew through without injuring themselves.
Prevention and Warning Signs
Derzi also recommends: "Homeowners should also ensure bins are securely closed, remove potential food sources where possible and avoid leaving pet food outside overnight." Common signs of an infestation include droppings, scratching noises, gnaw marks, and damage to insulation, wiring, or pipework.
While preventative measures help, Derzi emphasises: "Homeowners dealing with an active infestation should seek professional pest control advice as soon as possible. DIY solutions often fail to tackle the root cause of the problem."
