Stockport Town Centre's Remarkable Revival: A Model for Regeneration
Stockport's Revival: A Model for Regeneration

Stockport town centre is buzzing on a sunny Thursday morning, with cafes full and visitors enjoying the newly opened Viaduct Park. The town's revival, led by the Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) since 2019, has reversed decades of decline.

MDC Model Drives Transformation

The Stockport MDC, the first in Greater Manchester, expanded its boundary in February to include the entire town centre. The partnership between local leaders and then-Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has delivered a new transport interchange, apartments, and Stockport Exchange business district. Plans include 8,000 homes and new food and drink venues.

Mark Roberts, Lib Dem council leader, said the MDC put 'rocket boosters' under regeneration. He praised Burnham's cross-party approach: 'He is a rare beast within the Labour Party, he’s someone who can hear views from other people.'

Business and Resident Perspectives

Luis Sanjuan, owner of Cafe Sanjuan, noted a surge in new businesses and diversity. Amy Bills, a London transplant, said Stockport offers 'a good vibe' and is 'perfect' for those seeking a quieter alternative to Manchester. However, former Sky employee Tim Arthington highlighted homelessness and rising costs as ongoing challenges.

Future Plans and National Implications

With Burnham now an MP and potential future Prime Minister, the MDC model may be rolled out nationally. New chair Lord Gavin Barwell called it 'one of the most impressive urban regeneration schemes in the country.' Plans include a Metrolink extension, new school, health facilities, and 4,000 homes in three new neighbourhoods along the River Mersey.
