Climbing out of the shower only to grab a towel that was once soft but has since turned rough and coarse is one of life's little annoyances. If you're struggling to keep your towels feeling as luxurious as those in a hotel, there's a solution that doesn't require throwing them out and buying replacements.
Fabric Softener Is the Real Culprit
However, one widespread habit people turn to when trying to soften their stiff towels could actually be making things worse. According to Faz Salloo, a bathroom expert and owner of Bathroom Fort, the true culprit behind towels losing their softness is more often than not fabric softener.
He said: "Liquid fabric softener is oil-based, and it leaves a slick coating across the towel fibres that makes them far less absorbent over time. People think they're treating their towels, but it gradually does more harm than good."
This happens because the waxy build-up left behind by fabric softener accumulates over time and is notoriously difficult to shift. It can lead to trapped detergent and moisture, leaving your towels feeling stiff and stale even straight after a wash, reports the Mirror.
Two Budget-Friendly Ingredients Restore Towels
To restore your towels to their former glory, you won't need any specialist laundry products. Two budget-friendly ingredients you most likely already have in your kitchen cupboards will do the job just as well.
Faz said: "You can restore your towels using just two simple ingredients you'll already have at home, white vinegar and ordinary table salt."
The acetic acid present in white vinegar works to neutralise the detergent and fabric softener residue that causes that stiff feel. It also breaks down the build-up adhering to the fibres and eliminates any lingering smells trapped inside them.
Salt, meanwhile, works on the fibres themselves, loosening the compressed threads and removing the mineral deposits left by hard water, enabling the pile to soften and rise again.
Hard Water Affects Many UK Homes
With roughly 60% of UK households supplied with hard water, numerous homes face the effects of mineral build-up. Some people fear that laundering towels with vinegar will leave behind an unpleasant odour - but Faz maintained this isn't the case.
He said: "The vinegar smell lifts completely as the towels dry, so what you're left with is a fresh, clean towel rather than a sharp one. It's one of the cheapest laundry fixes going, and it's far gentler on the fabric than the products it replaces."
