A cleaning expert has shared a straightforward task that can keep toilets free from limescale and stubborn stains, reducing the need for intensive scrubbing. Delia Cannings, a specialist at the British Cleaning Council, told consumer watchdog Which? that regular cleaning is essential because the toilet is "the throne everybody has to sit on."
The Key Step: Pushing Water Down Before Cleaning
Many homeowners overlook this step, but it is crucial for preventing mineral deposits. After flushing the toilet with the lid closed to avoid a "toilet plume," use the toilet brush to push water further down the bowl. This exposes the waterline where limescale and stains typically accumulate.
Apply toilet cleaner to the exposed area and let it sit for the recommended time to break down dirt and limescale. Then scrub thoroughly, focusing on the waterline and under the rim. Finally, flush again with the lid closed to rinse away remaining cleaner.
Dealing with Limescale and Rust Stains
Cannings recommends using a descaler periodically, approximately every three months, depending on water hardness. For rust-coloured stains caused by elevated iron levels or corroded pipes, she advises an acid-based cleaner. "Bleach won't affect it much," she said, suggesting products like CLR (Calcium Lime Remover) or cleaning vinegar. Fresh lemon juice is another option that smells pleasant.
