White vinegar, a common kitchen cupboard item, can kill garden weeds naturally within hours, with faster results on hot sunny days, according to gardening expert Ifzaal, known as Nature with Ifzaal on TikTok.
How White Vinegar Works as a Weed Killer
Ifzaal explained in an April video: "Now, as the weather is warming up, you'll start to notice the weeds popping out through your lawn or through the gaps in your patio slabs. And if you're like me, you probably want to stay away from shop-bought weed killers, which often contain loads of chemicals and aren't always safe to use around kids or pets."
White vinegar contains acetic acid, which functions as a herbicide by breaking down the weed's cellular structure, causing dehydration and death. The effects are visible within a few hours, and weeds appear "burnt to a crisp" within three days, Ifzaal noted.
Application Tips and Precautions
To use, transfer white vinegar into a spray bottle and lightly coat the weeds. Alternatively, pour it directly from the container. However, Ifzaal warned: "Don't use this on your lawn because it will also damage your grass." The method works best on hot, sunny days, as heat accelerates the drying process.
Better Homes and Gardens noted that vinegar treatments perform optimally on younger weeds. Gardeners' World advised combining vinegar with baking soda, salt, or lemon juice for stubborn weeds, though vinegar alone may not permanently eliminate all types.
Effectiveness and Limitations
Gardening Know How explained that salt dehydrates plants and disrupts internal water balance, making it an effective additive. However, Better Homes and Gardens cautioned that salt can accumulate in soil, preventing other plants from thriving. Use sparingly in the same location.
Ifzaal emphasized the safety and economy of this method, stating: "This is a great DIY method using something simple that nearly everyone has in their kitchen cupboard."
