Natural Bran Barrier for £1.49 Keeps Slugs Away from Gardens

Slugs are a persistent problem for UK gardeners, causing an estimated £8 million in plant damage annually, according to Greenhouse Stores. These gastropods destroy seedlings and young plants almost overnight, creating irregular holes in vegetation. They feed at night, can travel up to 15 metres in a single evening, and a single slug produces up to 400 eggs per year. While active year-round, they are especially noticeable in spring and summer when young plants are abundant.

Chemical methods can kill slugs instantly but often harm soil and plant health. Natural barriers offer a safe, effective alternative.

Bran Barrier: Top-Rated Natural Solution

Bran barriers scored a perfect 5/5 in Gardeners' World trials, making them the most effective natural solution. Bran is available for £1.49 for 500g at Holland & Barrett or £1.99 for 500g on Amazon. To use, place a ring of wheat or oat bran around each plant, avoiding contact with stems. Slugs gorge on bran, becoming bloated and dehydrated, leaving them vulnerable to birds. The bran's drying effect is lethal to slugs, which are mostly water.

If slugs ignore the bran, blitz it into a fine powder with a mixer to make it more appetising.

Seaweed Meal: Dual-Purpose Deterrent

Greenside Up recommends seaweed meal, which has shown significant effectiveness. Sprinkle it around raised beds and individual seedlings, keeping it 5cm away from stems. Its high salt content deters slugs, while trace elements, minerals, vitamins, and amino acids nourish soil microorganisms. Gardeners' World endorsed this method, awarding it 4/5. Seaweed meal works best in garden beds and around seedlings.

Other Natural Barrier Materials

A BBC Gardeners' World reader survey highlighted other effective barriers: cat litter, horticultural grit, bark, ash, cocoa chips, sawdust, wool pellets, sand, and coffee grounds. These prickly or abrasive textures deter slugs but require regular replenishment. Note that most slugs live in the soil, not on the surface.
