Gardening expert Monty Don has shared a simple March lawn care task that can lead to thicker, healthier grass. In a recent blog post, Don emphasised the importance of an early trim, advising gardeners to mow their lawns lightly during March without cutting the grass too short.
According to Don, this approach promotes good growth and results in a healthier lawn that is better equipped to withstand summer drought. He recommends mowing little and often rather than making a single drastic cut, as removing too much grass at once can leave the lawn vulnerable to issues.
Don stressed that nurturing robust grass is key to a lush lawn, stating, 'Nine times out of 10, if the grass is healthy, then everything else will look after itself.' He also advised improving soil drainage by aerating the lawn with a fork every six inches, then brushing in a mixture of equal parts sieved topsoil, sharp sand, and sieved leaf mould or compost.
Additionally, Don suggests using a wire rake to clear away thatch and moss, allowing light and moisture to penetrate the soil. He noted that while the lawn may look bald for a week or so after raking, it will grow back thicker than ever.
