Merthyr Tydfil Play Areas Get £200k Refurbishment

Merthyr Tydfil Council has announced that two play areas will receive a total of £200,000 in refurbishments and improvements over the next year. Troedyrhiw Park Central in Plymouth ward and Mount Pleasant in Merthyr Vale have each been allocated £100,000 for the 2026/2027 financial year.

Additional Funding for Smaller Projects

The total capital funding of £260,000 includes £60,000 designated for smaller scale improvements and refurbishment projects across the county borough. This allocation aims to address the condition of multiple play areas that have suffered from years of underinvestment.

Selection and Prioritisation Process

According to a council report, the selection and prioritisation of sites were based on condition surveys, inspections, and assessments of factors such as the extent of repairs required, age, condition, realistic lifespan, and play value. In 2021, an independent report highlighted that many of the council's fixed play areas needed refurbishment, with some reaching the end of their lifespan.

Background of Play Area Investment

The council recognised the need to refurbish these sites and allocated capital money for a refurbishment programme that began in 2021. Since then, 22 sites have been refurbished. The council currently manages 54 fixed play areas throughout the county borough, many of which are coming to the end of their useful life and require refurbishment.

Importance of Play for Wellbeing

The report states: "Playground provision is a non-statutory service and as such, can be seen as a low priority, especially when local authorities have to make difficult choices on where to spend available funding. The last 10 to 15 years have been particularly challenging and a lack of investment in some non-statutory services resulted in no capital outlay for children's play areas."

It adds: "The council recognises the importance of play for the health and wellbeing of children and young people and for physical, social, mental and emotional aspects of life." The investment aims to address the backlog of repairs and provide safe, modern play facilities for the community.
