Garden experts unanimously recommend white vinegar mixed with washing-up liquid as the most effective natural solution for driveway weeds, eliminating the need for expensive chemical products. According to Luke Newnes, garden expert at Hillarys, this simple combination works best when sprayed directly onto weeds on a dry, sunny day, causing them to wilt within hours.
How the Vinegar Solution Works
Andy McLaughlin, sales and operations director at RF Paving, advises using vinegar with an acetic acid content between 5% and 20%, mixed with washing-up liquid to help the solution adhere to the weeds. He recommends applying it every two weeks for complete eradication. Jessica Mercer, horticulturist at Plant Addicts, warns that concentrated vinegars can be pricey and require eye protection, and should not be sprayed near garden plants.
Alternative Natural Methods
Boiling water is another effective option. Liam Sharkey, home expert at HomeServe, notes that it kills weeds on contact and is safe around pets and children. For stubborn weeds, McLaughlin suggests adding salt to boiling water—one part table salt to two or three parts water—but cautions that excessive salt can damage soil and natural stone surfaces.
Preventing Weed Regrowth
Newnes emphasizes that regular sweeping prevents seeds and debris from settling in driveway joints. He also recommends re-sanding block paving joints with kiln-dried sand to block light and discourage new growth. Ward Dilmore, founder of Petrus Landscaping, adds that natural weed killers work best in hot, sunny weather, as cold conditions reduce their effectiveness.
